When a tooth can’t be saved, an extraction may be needed. The dentist assesses the situation with an exam and X-rays, explains the procedure and what to expect afterwards, then gives you instructions to follow after the surgery. [Specify the procedures offered, for example wisdom teeth.]
[Section to be completed with the clinic: how the treatment goes, how long it takes, follow-up.]
After an extraction
What’s normal
- Light bleeding during the first few hours;
- swelling, often worse on the 2nd or 3rd day, then going down;
- tenderness in the area for a few days.
Be patient…
… as long as the pain and swelling get better day by day. For the first 24 hours: don’t spit, don’t rinse and don’t use a straw.
Call us if
- bleeding is still heavy after an hour of pressure;
- the pain gets worse after the 3rd day;
- you have a fever, or the swelling increases;
- an unpleasant taste or smell persists.
If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing: 911. Outside our opening hours: 811 (Info-Santé). [Advice to be approved by Dr. Berthiaume.]
